The high school sweethearts had attended prom together having graduated last Friday.

Mort Meier, superintendent of Marion Public Schools, said: 'The last time I saw both of these students was graduation last Friday.

'I had the great privilege shaking their hands. Imagine this, looking to their clear eyes, their big smiles, they're graduating, just getting ready to take that step into the next phase of your life.'
