Per Evening Standard, Karim is profoundly deaf, a result of contracting meningitis when he was a toddler- 2 years old-, and admits that as a schoolboy he had to work hard on his self-confidence. His shyness is a consequence of his disability, Karim was never the type to hang out at celebrity parties.

Karim Al-Fayed was 13 when his brother Dodi died
Karim was sent as a boarder to the Mary Hare grammar school for deaf children in Newbury, Berkshire when he was 11 years old. The school is regarded as one of the best in the UK.
He was just 13 years old and at the boarding school when his elder half-brother Dodi died. “I wasn’t really aware of what was going on [with Dodi and Diana],” he told Standard about his brother. “I mean, Dodi was busy, and I was at school. We both had our own lives.” His father has said that Diana and Dodi “were executed by MI6 agents“.
